This often results in people thinking that they are a ‘fraud’ and don’t deserve to be in their job!?  These feelings are called imposter syndrome and it has been identified as something that regularly holds women back in leadership roles especially in the earlier part of their leadership career. (70% of all people will encounter imposter syndrome at some stage of their life)

 Join us at the first event in our new “Empowering Women in Leadership Series” – where Captain Deirdre Carbery of The Irish Defence Forces, Miriam Walker, Head of Retail & Wholesales at Glanbia, and Sheila Dowling, Sales Director of Bewley’s will be sharing insights and personal experiences and suggested actions to face and overcome Imposter Syndrome in the working environment.

Vice Admiral Mark Mellett Bio:

Mark Mellett has over 40 years’ service as an officer in the Irish Defence Forces. He is the first naval officer in the Irish State to serve as Chief of Staff. He commenced his military career as an army reservist, before being selected for a naval cadetship in the Permanent Defence Forces.

For over two decades he has been a change leader, contributing to ongoing transformation and positioning the Irish forces in a post-modern setting. He has extensive experience at home and abroad, including in Afghanistan and Lebanon, in combined and joint operational missions.

As a specialist Naval Diving Officer and Commander of three seagoing commands, Admiral Mellett participated in and led numerous counter terrorism and counter narcotic operations. He was the second Naval Officer in the history of the Irish State to be awarded “The Distinguished Service Medal (DSM)” by the Irish Government for his leadership of a complex maritime narcotics interdiction operation.

Admiral Mellett is a champion of internal and external organisational diversity. He led the introduction of a Diversity and Inclusion Strategy in the Defence Forces (the first of its kind in the Irish Public Service), which focused on gender, culture, creed, age and sexual orientation.

Holder of a Doctorate in Political Science and a Masters in Government and Public Policy, and also been a Visiting Professor abroad in Liverpool Hope University and is currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at University College Cork. He was the distinguished graduate of the senior command and staff courses he attended at the Irish Military College, the US Naval War College and the UK Royal Naval College Greenwich.

In this Director level lunch event Vice Admiral Mark Mellett will share insights and advice based on his distinguished career in the Defence Forces.

Meet the Sales Skills Speakers

  • Jason Cooper is a Neuro Selling Expert and an NLP Practitioner with over twenty years’ experience as both a training director and a sales training consultant. Jason’s session will focus on the topic of the science behind your sales messaging. He will show you how message to engage buyer’s emotions to increase their receptiveness to your suggestions and ideas, and he will show you how to align your sales questions with how the customer’s brain discloses information based on Neuroscience.

  • Martin Garvey is the EMEA lead for Own the Room.com. Martin’s presentation will share ideas on how you can become a more confident communicator. Martin is super, he spoke in Cork for The Institute and his average feedback score was 9.6. Take a ways from Martin’s session will include - (1) Learn the essential communication skills that can help you break through barriers to become a more confident, compelling & concise sales communicator, (2) How to become a more memorable sales related speaker.

  • Neil Curran brings something completely new to our Sales Skills events. “Improv for Sales – An innovative approach for selling”. Neil will show how ditching the script of features and benefits and being more adaptive a lead to more impactful and powerful sales engagements. He will also share some of the fundamentals of improv for sales. Should be very interesting and may even good fun also!

Martin Kelleher is Managing Director of Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland, which operates the SuperValu and Centra brands that generate combined retail sales of approximately €4.3bn. Prior to his appointment in 2010, Martin held the position of Managing Director of Musgrave Wholesale Partners.

He has also previously served as Consumer Insights Director and Sales Director of both the Centra and SuperValu brands, as well as holding roles in Musgrave’s Trading and Finance team. Born in Cork, Martin holds a BComm from University College Cork and is a member of the Institute of

He is a patron for both the LGBTQ community in sport and the “Bullies Out” charity in Wales. In 2016. He is an inspiring speaker and a great role model for inclusion and diversity in society. In recent years, progressive organisations have been focusing upon empowering women to take on more leadership positions and to activate their own potential. 2018 research suggests that women make up approximately 31.5% of senior management positions in Irish business. Whilst the situation is improving, women are still in a large minority and at a time when there has never been as many females at work. The benefits of having a more gender-balanced leadership team have been outlined in many research papers ranging from improved collaboration, innovation and staff retention right across to better financial organisational performance.

That said, trusting their own voice, standing by their own achievements and tackling imposter syndrome have been identified as some of the top challenges women face when in and seeking to be appointed to leadership roles. Join us at this Institute event where Patricia Hyland, Chief Wellbeing Officer at McNulty Performance ( a senior business leader in Ireland for over 25 years) and Dervilla O’Brien, MD and Founder of Healthbridge Technology (a C Level Director for 20 years) will explore the causes and possible actions that can be taken by women to find their voice and develop self-confidence to overcome barriers to women in leadership role success.

Set in the dining hall of Ireland’s oldest university, and including a visit to the Book of Kells, The Executive Institute Gathering will take place on the evening of Wednesday, April 17th at Trinity College, Dublin.


This is an executive-level event for senior members of our community to connect, chat and make new senior-level business contacts in these historical surroundings.

Light refreshments and canapes will be served at this purely social & content free event. A short visit to see the Book of Kells will also be a part of the makeup of the evening.
